Rodney Roberts, Akin Kurtulan, Terrie Norman, and Jolie Feng competed at the World Masters Judo Championships held in Atlanta, GA. The World Masters is one of the largest Masters Judo tournaments, It is held over 5 days, and includes kata, regular shiai divisions, open, green-belt and under divisions, and a team tournement. This year, they allowed the women to hold an Open Age division (same weight, any age) to give them more fights.
Kata - Jolie and Terrie competed in the Women's Katame and Ju No Katas. This year's kata tournament was smaller than previous years, with only 51 katas competed. They won an uncontested gold in the Women's Katame, and a silver in Women's Ju, beating another US team but losing to a Canadian pair. This is their warm up to the World Kata Championships in Malta, in October. They were pleased to find that their katame no kata scores would have placed them third overall compared against all 8 katame teams.
Shiai - Terrie competed in the F3 (Women's 40-45 years) 63kg division and took a silver.
She beat one Brazilian despite a knee injury she sustained during a kata
practice and tutorial session on Tuesday. Terrie lost to the other Brazilian - makikomi for ippon -
during a tough match. Rodney fought in the M3 90kg, and Akin in M1 81kg. Both went 1 win, 2 losses.
